**Our “Franchisee Spotlight” blog series introduces you to the owners that make Pool Scouts great. We’ll offer you a little insight into a member of the Pool Scouts Nation, where they are from and what makes them unique!**

GET TO KNOW JOHN

John is the owner and Operator of Pool Scouts of McKinney and Northeast DFW.  He married “Anna from Atlanta” in 2005. The couple moved to McKinney for Anna’s leadership role with the Raising Canes chicken finger chain.  In 2007 they welcomed their baby girl, Genevieve, to the world. They have a very playful and sweet rescue dog named Cooper, or “Cuddles”.  The Breton’s love to travel and John’s been to twenty-six countries to-date with Germany and Turkey being among his favorites.

Q&A WITH JOHN

Hear from John on what made him decide to join Pool Scouts, what he’s learned over time, and more!

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Sea Centipede in Tahiti, it was delicious! Highly recommend it!

Why did you pick Pool Scouts? What were the key factors in your choice? Differentiators?

I chose Pool Scouts since I grew up with a pool in Virginia and had lots of fun memories poolside and Texas is a great pool market. I also thought the brand, support, and leadership were stronger than other concepts I explored.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Probably a bear, the soft gentle kind since that suits my soft cuddly personality.

If you could have an endless supply of any food, what would you get?

Texas Twinkies: Smoked Jalapeno wrapped in bacon, stuffed with brisket and cream cheese.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Tennis, scuba diving, traveling, sneaker shopping, and spending time with Team Breton!

What is one piece of advice you would give to new franchisees? Potential franchisees?

Know your numbers! Margins, labor cost, COGS, competitors’ costs. The more comfortable you are with your numbers the better you can enjoy and control your business.

What is your favorite thing about the Pool Scouts family?

I love that we started with one other franchisee in DFW and now we have 6 in the DFW market.

How do you prefer to start and end your day?

I like to start my day with an Ally Love Peloton workout and end my day grilling and swimming with my family.

What led you to this career?

I wanted to have a business that was our own and make an impact on it and our community. Working for start-ups and in corporate settings didn’t meet my expectations anymore.

Why a franchise versus starting your own business from scratch?

I wanted a team to work with and a blueprint to follow. I think we would be a tiny pool service and not enjoy it as much if it were not for our fellow franchisees and corporate team.

What energizes you at work?

Making Pool Scouts a household name in residential pool services and making owning a pool a joy again!

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important?

I’m learning how to understand and run our business more effectively with better forecasting and planning. I received a scholarship to take part in the Goldman Sachs 10K Small Business program. I’m halfway through the small business mentorship program and I am learning a great deal about money & metrics, forecasting, leadership, culture, mission & vision, etc.
